They are also renowned for their traditional tattoos and communal longhouses called "Uma."
In recent times, the Mentawai have faced significant external challenges threatening their traditional way of life. Deforestation, driven by logging and the expansion of palm oil plantations, has encroached upon their ancestral lands, disrupting their environment and resources. Modernization and government policies promoting assimilation have further pressured the Mentawai to abandon their customs and adopt mainstream Indonesian culture. These influences have led to a decline in traditional practices, including their animist rituals and tattooing traditions.
In response, initiatives have emerged to preserve and revitalize Mentawai culture. Local organizations have been advocating for the rights of Indigenous peoples since 1995, facilitating the mapping of Indigenous lands and supporting cultural preservation efforts. Additionally, the Mentawai community has recognized the need to protect their traditions to improve their health, well-being, and quality of life. Proposed strategies include community-driven indigenous educational programs designed to provide Mentawai people with the opportunity to reconnect with and learn the most important and relevant aspects of their cultural and environmental heritage.
